INTRODUCTION

The Department of Zoology was established in 1979 being affiliated to the University of Madras with 20 under-graduates (B.Sc.,) students with an aim to provide quality education and contribute for the development of Animal Sciences and Zoological studies. The scope of the department of Zoology is to provide affordable educational services, so as to help improve the educational expertise of the economically downtrodden students of the society in biological sciences.

The college is situated in Kanchipuram, a reputed temple city with the sole aim of providing quality education to rural poor and average students. Initial teaching efforts in the department were tailored to train students leading them to a B.Sc degree. Subsequently to meet the increasing demands of students graduated especially from our college a post-graduate (M.Sc., Zoology) course was started in the year 2005, as a self-finance course emphasizing with special emphasis on the emerging areas of modern biology. The department is adequately provided with laboratory facilities and modern teaching aids for both B. Sc., and M.Sc., courses. The faculty of the department is dedicated to serve the students and conducts various skill related classes for the benefit of students. There us a fairly good library containing more than 3,000 books which provide easy access to all students. The strength of the Department lies in its highly qualified and devoted teaching staff, with diverse research interests in basic and applied biosciences. Our pedagogy focuses on basic and applied fields of Zoology assisted with demos, models, videos, etc. A small room offspring, M.Sc., student research with all the essential requisites for the pursuits of basic and applied biosciences has been established. During the last few years more than 100 research papers along with several book chapters have been published in reputed national and internal journals/books in the department faculty.

VISION

The Department of Zoology promotes acquiring a broad spectrum of knowledge about the biology of animals, evolution, and their environment.

To accomplish transcendence through excellent education and researches, to prepare the students suit the opportunities at local, regional, national, and international levels.

Foster excellence in innovative educational practice to promote interdisciplinary teaching and research in all areas of basic and applied biosciences.

These make them able to contribute effectively in this dynamic era. Recognizing the essential roles of science and biology in the lives of citizens today and tomorrow, we emphasize biological literacy in our teaching and outreach programs.

MISSION

To provoke flair to explore, understand, and conserve animal diversity. To provide an attractive ambience in the department to help the students acquire knowledge.

To train the students in basic and applied biosciences, so as to apply themselves meaningfully in any activity is requiring zoological expertise. Field visits of B.Sc., and M.Sc., students aim to provide a wide-spectrum comprehension of the anatomy, physiology, systematic, ecology, behavior, and conservation of terrestrial and aquatic/marine animals. At M. Sc., level, the department maintains a high level of scientific excellence in biological research.

Disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach helps the students to learn by making connections between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries as a way to deepen the learning experience.

To empower the students is about the contemporary advancements in life sciences for the benefit of humanity. Reinvent ourselves in response to the changing demands of society with high moral values as a good citizen. To establish conductive atmosphere for the students learn Advances in Zoology and its associated technology.
